San Pedro (Trichocereus pachanoi)
San Pedro, Echinopsis pachanoi is a cactus native to South America and has had traditional religious and medicinal use for over 3000 years. Of the various alkaloids it contains, mescaline is responsible for its psychoactive effects.
San Pedro is a columnar cactus. One in a thousand San Pedro cacti grows into a mutant. The mutation can take all kinds of different forms, including this beautiful cristal or fan shape.
Under both dry and humid conditions the cactus grows, but it grows quickly when regularly watered. However, the cactus can survive for years without water and even form new side shoots.
San Pedro contains several alkaloids, including mescaline, a substance with psychoactive properties.
In traditional cultures it is known by different names, such as huachuma, achuma, wachuma and aguacolla.
